ok this is a serious question about tank size don't flame still researching.

how many fan tails need to be kept together for optimum health.
how many black moors need to be kept together for optimum health.

can black moors be used to substatute for fan tail numbers for company or do those numbers have to be for each breed specific and seperately?

how big of a tank will they need as adults?

i ask cuz my wife wants a gold fish tank badly. as it stands now according to what i have read on the net for her to enjoy a healthy well cared for gold fish tank she will need to find space for an 8foot by 3 foot tank that is like 300 or more gallons and she can't just get one black moor and one fantail they need a group of 3 or more. which means for her to have her blasted gold fish i need what a 300 gallon aquarium? and that is only for the fancy fish i can't even squeeze in a common gold fish *i only like the silver colored commons or comets mabey* because they are too boisterous for the fancy fish when in the same tank.

and near as i can figgure the only company i can give the gold fish in the tank with them is a pleco or 2?

please correct me if i am in error. *read as please tell me i am wrong.*:thud::rant2:

thanks i know you all love these fish and i an not trying to detract from them at all. your love for them is exactly why i am asking you all.

i try and allow 20 gallons per fish that has worked for me for years. and i would not advise keeping pleco's as some of them will suck the slime off of goldfish and can do damage so i dont own a pleco for that reason. i have resued several goldfish that have been injured from pleco so i know it does happen.
i try and not mix comets and fancies.
a 300G tank will be a centerpiece with just a mix of fancy goldies.
massive filtration will make life alot easier so dont skimp on the filter part, goldies eat and poop like ponies and a great filter set up makes life so much easier and will make your tank alot more enjoyable.

OK, things aren't as bad as they seem.

While Goldfish do prefer to to live in a group, they don't need to. The world record age goldfish lived alone for 43 years!!!

As for tank size, start thinking 20gal for one adult fancy goldfish and go up from there. 4 fish should be fine in a 55gal which is a 4ft x 12" tank.

You can mix fantails and black moors, they are the same species and have a similar body form (fat with long fins). Best not to mix them with the slim bodied commons and comets, as they get much bigger and swim faster.

You can of course start them out in a smaller tank, when you buy them at 1 or 2" they would be fine in a 2ft tank. But after 6-12 months they are going to grow and need more space. As they can live for 10 or so years in good conditions, the big tank is worth it.

I have two black moors in a 55 gallon tank, and find that quite well stocked as it is. I recommend 30 gallons per goldfish, just because they are so messy...they produce way more ammonia than any other common fish. (Stingrays might produce more)

I use two AquaTech 30-60 tanks on a 55 gallon tank. I clean one one week, the other the next. I also use a powerhead on each side - airstones can work too, goldfish like to play in those bubble walls. :) As far as flow is concerned, powerheads give you more bang for your buck (and you avoid those noisy air pumps).

I recommend a 4 foot tank for goldfish because they're long lived fish, and even fancies will reach about 8" at full grown. However one black moor in a 30 gallon tank should be ok - as has been said, goldfish don't really need company. But it is more fun to watch them interact with each other :)

You'll find when you continue researching that plecos and goldfish are not a good mix. Plecos can suck the slime coat off of slow moving fish like goldfish. They compete for the same foods - algae wafers, fresh veggies. Common plecos add a lot of bioload to the tank and will outgrow a 55 gallon tank in time. Bristlenose are better, they stay smaller, but again no need for one, and you take a risk combining plecos with goldfish. If you want an algae eater, try olive nerite snails. They also don't mind the cooler temps goldfish prefer, although fancy goldfish don't like it as cold as common goldfish.

yeah ok that is what i thought.

55 gallon should be good then with one black moor and one fantail with good filtration?

do the fancies need long tanks or deept or tall or all?

i ask cuz i have a dragon goby and he could care less how tall his tank is he just wants floor space. and yes i know he doesn't mix with gold fish :).

there is a 150 gallon tank at one of our local pets stores for about 250 bucks. i know 250 is 250 but that is still cheaper than i could make it for atm at least so it is an option. any way i took wife to look at it and told her it would fit like 2 -3 full grown fantails. then i started reading on the net that nope that is not true and i shouldn't even really try to keep them in a tank any **** way cuz they are pond fish etc. and that each fish needs like 3 foot linear to swim in with like 2 foot extra for each additional.

to be honest the house already has a center peice and this will just be going in the bed room unless i get reall lucky and get the go ahead to put the goby tank in the bedroom *with it in the bedroom i would have free run to decorate as i see fit no one else would see it*

my wife really really wants a goldfish tank. our house is really really small. it is too way too hot to have cold water fish in a pond here outside 125 in summer. even a 30 x 30x 10 foot pond here gets to almost 90 durring the summer. too hot too long for really any fish.

sorry for the ramble but my house is short on space that aformentioned pond is larger than any two rooms in my house put together. my living room alone is only about 9 foot by 15 foot. so doing 2 fish per 150 gallons is not a happy option for me especially if i will be stuck with them for 10 years.

are there any other smaller fish that go along with goldfish to "fill out" the tank?

Given that you have limited space I'd look at a 75 gallon tank. They are 4' long just like a 55 gallon but are 18 inches wide instead of 12". You can safely house 3-4 fancy types in a tank this size versus 2-3 in a 55 gallon. The extra width is needed for when the fish reach 12"+ in length.

As for tankmates, there are quite a few things that work well with goldfish. I've kept without issues Bristlenose plecos, Siamese algae eaters, Garra pingi pingi, paradise fish, and rosy reds minnows. White Cloud Mountain Minnows are commonly recommended but they were too small and got eaten in my tank. Guppies got the same fate. I've also kept ramshorn and Malaysian trumpet Snails without issues. The larger apple snails get beat up too bad.

As for the pond that reaches 90 in the summer if you plant lotus or another floating plant and have a fountain you should be able to control the temp better. Goldfish can take those kind of temperatures for a few months as long as they have enough oxygen in the water.

wow thanks

ok thanks i will keep an eye out for those 75 gallon tanks.

would mollies get along well with the goldfish?

the pond isn't mine i was merely using it as a reason why not to do a pond where i live. and it is heavy planted with shade trees at that

yeah it actually reaches about 3 months straight temps of too hot to swim in and that is on 120 degree days LOL. "hey man wanna go to the pond? nope too hot i am gonna stay here in this cannel." any way that pond is bigger than my house and it can't stay cool in the summer so i figgure why even try with a small one.

ok thanks

alright well it looks like i will tell her *wife* that the stocking would be as follows.

55 gallon = 2
75 gallon = 3

gonna need to set up a sump to handle wastes.

looks like the gold fish will need to be solo given mine and her tastes.
do goldfish do well in planted tanks or do i need to set up a bare tank for them?

wouldn't think you'd need a sump for 3 goldfish and whatever tankmates you give them. a couple HOB's like platytudes has or an external cannister should handle 3 big goldfish fine.

and why is the violet gobie a bad idea? i haven't heard that before, but then goldies aren't my thing. do they beat him up?
