Normal for fish to have no color in morning?

This is an interesting phenomenon I've noticed. Fish have their color throughout the day. Then I turn off the light and go to bed. When i turn on the light the next morning, they all look practically like glassfish. The color comes back fairly quickly, in about 15 minutes or so. Is this normal?

Color loss is usualy caused by stress, witch is SUPPOSED to be relieved when the lights go off. I never have heard of color returning when the lights come back on. Is something happening in your house at night that would freak out your fish?

it's quite normal. fish 'sleep' at night and when they do, their color is significantly diminished. when you turn on the tank lights too abruptly first thing in the morning, the fish are 'startled' the same as most people would be if someone burst into their room at 3 AM and hit the lights. it's best to turn on a room light for about 15 minutes BEFORE you turn on the tank lights. the fish will return to normal color gradually as they 'wake up'.

My fish do that. I usually turn on the dimmer one first, for a few minutes, before I hit the brights. Some of them seem more faded than others but their color comes back almost immediately.

Seems totally normal for me to see pale color first thing in the AM or when lights are just turned on.

That's strange. We've actually noticed that our black skirt tetra's "skirt" is much darker when we first turn on the lights in the morning. His color has also darkened during the day since adding our driftwood. I think he prefers the lower PH.

I notice the Otos go dark, when they're over dark substrate, and they turn lighter when they aren't. But typically all of my fish are pretty pale in the mornings. It takes them anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to wake up, sleepyheads. *lol*

My neons are like that. Dull at first, then brighten up. It's normal.

My cardinal Neons do that and the seem fine to me. I read somewhere that some fish do lose color while they sleep. Are the neons colors there and then gone when you turn on the light or are they pale already.
