I was in Petco the other day and saw a new (at least I've never seen it before) hang on the tank filter. It had a feature called Bio-Falls that I guess works like a Bio-Wheel, except it's stationary. I didn't want to take one out of the box to look at it because I figured they wouldn't like that very much. Has anybody ever tried one of these? They weren't as expensive as the filters with biowheels and I'm wondering if they actually provide that much more biological filtration. I think they're made by Penn-Plax, but I'm not sure.

Yes its called cascade cheap as dirt. Break very easy. the bio falls is just an attachment that connects to the output to guide the flow of water. I dont think it does anything. In my exp. penn-plax is just cheap crap.

I got the idea that Penn Plax wasn't very good from the "worst purchase made" thread on the general freshwater board. I was just curious to if these did anything or not. I was going to buy one, but decided against it, which was apparently a good choice.

Yeah, I saw those penn-plax filters also, but they just didn't interest me enough to ask about them. The best advice I can give about buying filters however is to check online prices before buying one in the store. Even on the HOB powerfilters you can save quite a bit of money this way. Heck, Petco.com probably has the filter you want for a lesser price after shipping is included.

Penn Plax does make some aquarium items that are good. Maybe this particular filter isn't one of them.
Hey, the same company that makes the Corvette also made the Chevette.
