I finally got a pair of convict cichlids. I know one of them is a female because of the more rounded fin and she has orange on her underside. The other one though im not sure of. He, i think, has a more flat head but the fins are sort of long, but i just cant tell. I got them home and their colors darkened completely. The black got much blacker and on the female her orange darkened too. They follow each other around the tank, and ever once in a while the one i think is a male will flare his gilles at her and she does the same back. They dont attack each other, or fight at all, just flare their gills. why do they do that?

It's part of the courtship with Firemouth's, but aggression in Convicts? I'm finding conflicting info on the web. Seems it should be one or the other in Cichlids. But then, I'm just learning about them myself. The more I read, the more I find it is the male doing the gill flaring toward the female, but you say both of yours are doing it. From what you described, sounds like you sexed them correctly.

One will do it, and when the other sees it does the same thing, and its like they kind of slide past on another, touching.

Yup, thats fishy 4play. Soon they will lip lock and then uhhh...

So does that mean that more than likely it is a male and female. Will the same sex of fish do this to each other?

I just cant tell whether this one is a male or not. Can anyone tell me, because i think i got two females. The one in the background, i dont know if you can see or not, i know is a female because of the orange on the side, but do all females have this orange. I read that when the females mature that the orange shows, but this one is bigger than the other one and the smaller one has orange on it.

sounds like it may be male/female, as if they were same sex its more likley they would nip and attack eah other, not just display to each other

I did some more research, and i think that a "breeding tube" is visible on my female convict. Does this mean that there will be eggs soon?
