I bought a Marineland c220 today. Except for the small leak I love everything about it. If I can figure out the problem or how to fix it I feel like I'll be very happy with this filter. This is my first canister so I was very cautious setting it up, following the directions to the letter. I even watched the entire setup DVD that came with it before I did anything and went through it step by step during setup. The leak seams like it spits up a drop every couple of minutes through the attachment that the rubber hoses connect to. Mind you, not at where the actual rubber hoses connect, but at the base of that piece that comes up and connects to the hose. I'm sorry I can't be more descriptive as its been a long day and I can't think of the name at the moment.

Should I bring the whole thing back to the store I bought it from? Should I just ask them for a replacement piece? Should I just call Marineland and have them help me? The only thing that worries me is that the instructions said the box should have came with a tube of silicone grease.

turn the filter off, drain the water from the hoses, and loosen the hose nut, try to slide the hose on the end more, also make sure your hose is cut at a flat 90degree, that will help it seal, when tighting the nut, get it tight, but not too tight to crack the plastic, if you contact marineland, they will pry send you a new valve block, or new tubing.

good luck!!!

If I remember correctly, you really have to jam down on that peice. PM Rbishop, I know he has quite a few of the C series. He might be able to help out.

If you try all of the above and still leaking--return it to the store for another one.

Wow. according to what you say leaking not from the hose connection but from where the filter stem connector meets the valve block sound like a crack from possible a mold manufacture defect. If its a chain store Id pack it all up and take it back and ask for an exchange or my money back their choice. That is what my retailer offered.
dealing with marineland directly on spare parts sometimes goes well and sometimes takes an act of congress. Nevertheless from what the manual shows you cannot fix that part, you have to have a complete valve block. Maybe your retailer will allow you to switch parts. Either way don't keep it the way it is.

Depending on how fast they turnover product at the place where you purchased it, you could have one of the original 220s that had valve block cracks. That was about 2 yrs ago though. Definitely pack it up and return it to the store if you can.

Sometimes the crack didn't develop until pressure was applied by the owner when pushing the hoses on during set up.

K, so here is the deal. Last night after I posted I turned off the filter, drained the hoses and removed the valve block to inspect it. There was only maybe a nickel to a quarters worth size of water after having it run, but it wasn't for long so it worried me. I called up the retailer I bought it from and they said come down with the valve block and they would see what they could do. We found that the c160 valve block is the same size and that was the only other one they had in stock. They swapped the valve block off of the c160 and gave me that one to try. It fit perfectly, I had it running for about 40 mins before I left the house and didn't notice any leaking. When I came home about 5 hours later I noticed 2 water droplets. One was on the headpiece right below the valve block as if it had dripped off, the other was slipping down the side as if it came from the same place. I dunno if this was water that was in the space for the valve block that was pushed out slowly from when I pressed the new one in or what... I dunno if is another leak. I'll have to wait until morning to see... but that sort of scares me.

Update. No further water droplets since last night. So I'm guessing it was just water that was stuck in the tight seal that worked its way out? If that makes any sense... Seems good now though. I love the canister compared to my HOBs... It's SOOOO much quieter.

keep an eye on that block and make sure it isnt still leaking...a little leak can turn into a pretty big leak quickly. i would contact Marineland and have them ship out a new C-220 block to you, because you really should have parts for your filter, not a C-160.

That's why you always want to have plenty of napkins when testing something new or used so you can dry the area well and return to verify water also on the floor / rug as self spilled water puddles and droplets can linger for as much as 24 hours. Perhaps the original valve block was OK lol. Well main thing is its working but I for one have heard enough about the C series to shy away.
