Hi. I have three neons in a small tank, one I have had for maybe two months and the other two were purchased together about a week ago. I know this is too few fish to really "school", but the two new neons are hanging out with eachother but not with the older one. I thought maybe the old one was a cardinal but I looked up pics and they're definitely all neons. Water params are good and fish are healthy. Does anyone know if the fish will group together at some point?

They won't always school together. I have neon tetras and 3-4 might school together at one point but unless they're really scared, they won't all school together. What size is your tank? Maybe they feel safe enough that they don't feel the need to really school. Or perhaps simply, they're just not used to the old tetra yet.

My neons have stealth capability. I had one jumbo neon (rescue) and 2 green neons on my 30g. I knew this was too few, so the other day I picked up 4 regular neons and added them to the tank. Couple days later, I have the jumbo, two greens, and two normal neons. The other two are nowhere to be seen. Odd.

I have 3 of them in a 5g (moving to the 10 and getting more soon) and for the first month or so they did not school together at all. But recently they have started schooling a bit more. They seem to play follow the leader a lot :) But they do split up to do other stuff.

well, first of all, it might be bc they are in a too small of a group:) schooling fish are known as schooling fish! BC they school! amazing right, lol;)
and to school, they need a school, u see what im saying;) a trio is a trio, not a school:D

okay, done with using same words;) so basically, just try adding more;) and u will always have ones that think they are boss and stay in pairs or all alone:)

My neons generally school, but they are in a 75 with plenty other fish, some of which are larger. Sometimes they don't school, but with 12 of them it's plenty to school. Yours, being in a small tank and with no other fish, have nothing to fear. They will stick together, but there isn't really a ton of room to avoid one another in a 5gal, so they probs don't have any fear of separation.
