One of my neons won't school with the rest. Is there something wrong with him? Is this a sign of something or is it normal?

yes, there is, my old friend. check him for the symptoms of common diseases.

actualy, I've read that neon tetras are shoaling fish, meaning that while they swim in groups and seem to school they wont always school and that behavior could be explained by other things, but if the fish are new to the tank then you should definately check it for problems and neons tend not to be very hardy fish. Another note, unless your black skirt tetras are schooling with your neons they are probably verry stressed and i've read that dwarf's can become agressive if not kept in pairs

Yeah.
I never considered Neons a schooling fish. >.>;

You can see a difference between them and an actual schooling fish like Cardinals imo.

For what it's worth, I see that from time to time in one of my tanks.
One or two of the Neons don't school for awhile. Maybe they're just on a coffee break... After a while they'll join the others again. Never had a problem with them.

Well looked into it more and it might be early sign of neon tetra disease. They say it is terminal. He is showing no other symptoms of it. They are my newest additions so maybe he is just adjusting. (I hope) So I guess it turns into the waiting game for a little while. Has any one else experienced neon tetra disease?

Bigougit- On occasion my black skirts school with my neons. My tank is very peacful. Nobody even chases each other. As far as the dwarfs go, you probably talked to the same guy I did when I first bought them. Dwarfs are only really aggresive to each other. On the advice of a guy at a LFS I bought two male dwarfs. What a mistake! They were gonna kill each other the second they went in. I returned one of the dwarfs and the guy said he was baffled. I did a little research and talk about the completely wrong advice. 2 males will always attack each other. If you want 1 male and a female, you actually have to get 2 -3 females because the male will harass 1 female to death. At least with 2 he can alternate the harrasment. Long story short, either keep one or a whole bunch of them. Also if the tank is big enough that they don't really see each other that much is ok.

Well that creates a problem for me. Well besides not schooling the tetra seems fine. If my whole tank could be in danger do I get rid of him without being sure? I know its only a tetra, but I really don't want to, lets be honest, flush him. Could this really endanger my whole tank? Is there a period it is contagious or is it always? Is there any other obvious symptoms? I've read that a lot is degenerative so I guess signs don't show for awhile. Maybe that's just his style. I hope so.

I will be honest, if you don't you will loose all of your characins. I made the mistake of playing the waiting game and it was NTD. Only my pl#co survived. I still feel horrible and I still ended up having to put them down in the end.

if you're gonna kill him DON'T flush him!! would you kill kittens by throwing them in a river!?! put him in a cup of club soda and freeze him. he will have a quick and painless death.
