Discovered this Neon Tetra when I came in this afternoon (middle of pic);

It didn't have this weird protrusion late last night, or this morning when I last checked them. I did a 25% water change last night. They were fed frozen brine shrimp and a few bloodworm, and they all made pigs of themselves...a dramatic case of overeating?

These neons are in with three dwarf cichlids (Bolivian Rams) which are currently fighting very aggressively with one another, and have been seen to charge at the neons occasionally too....could it be an injury?

Any thoughts.....anyone seen anything like this before?

Thank you for your insights...... :(

My thoughts are constipation and taking dear sweet time to get it out or a prolapse (intestines fall out) in which case there is nothing you can do. I have never heard of a fish having a prolapse, but I don't doubt it is possible. It also looks swollen in the belly like a purple-ish color which could point to a bleed inside.

It does look like an intestinal prolapse to me as well. I've seen the same thing in a Bolivian Ram I had. My Ram also had the dreaded parasitic worms hanging out though, and I assumed it was the result of him trying to pass them. The good news is I don't see any worms in your neon, and the prolapses can sometimes pop back in as easily as they pop out. Not much you can do but keep an eye on him.

Thank you for the replies. The poor neon's "prolapse" grew increasingly fluffy last night.....and then simply broke away.

I think it was an especially large poo, brought about by excessive consumption of frozen brine shimp, the greedy little pig. :)

I'm glad for him that he is now "passed" (sic) the worst of it. :rofl:
