Hi, I have some Sarasa Comets which I rescued from being flushed down the toilet about 2 months ago. One of them is predominantly silver, the other is predominantly orange.

Over the last day or so I have noticed that the silver is developing a yellowish tinge. Behaviour is unchanged and fins etc are all in good condition. They are fed goldfish flakes 2 - 3 times daily. In their tanks are 2 loaches, 3 snails, 4 plants and a few ornaments. Th esnails are the newest addition (about a week). A few days ago I added some slices of courgette (for the loaches actually), but the goldfish ate it like it was going out of fashion.

Why are the silver portions yellowing? I'm hoping that it is because previously they were not fed so well and were pale. All advice welcome. :)

My silvers got yellow as they got older. I honestly think that you are seeing the fat beneath the scales. I really notice it on mine along the back and sides and on top of their heads.

OK, thanks Jackiomy. We've only had them a few weeks really though, that said, I don't know how old they are. They are about 3 inches minus tail. Maybe I'm feeding them too much.

I wouldn't worry, at three inches a comet is either very severely stunted or a juvenile. Goldfish colors are largely unstable over a lifetime. I had a telescope that was completely black with orange "eyelids" and as an adult, she is completely gold. It is not unusual for silver to change to a goldish hue as the fish ages. I have also had a black telescope "evolve" into a panda, but not start the color change until she was two years old. Genetics, diet, age and exposure to sunlight can all be factors in the coloration of the fish.

Yay, you, for saving goldfish! :)

 I am awful about feeding my fish. My BF is always on my case because all my fish are pudgy.

OK, thanks everybody. Somervell, I do wonder if they are stunted as when we got them they came in a tiny plastic hexagonal tank, about the size of a small goldfish bowl. The first thing we did was get them a 70 Litre Tank with filter. If they are stunted, will they grow now?

I don't know how anybody could flush them down the toilet.
