also new but had the same thing happen to me

do you have any other fish and if you do are they all doing that? If so the oxygen levels might be low that is what was wrong with mine. Like i said though i am new. So might not be it but thought i would let you know what was wrong with mine.

i think they are just breathing
they have good eating habits but my tank is only a 10 gallon im expose to be getting a larger one within the week but they are still just babys so its ok

Ok, more info needed, as was said before...
Just a guess though.... if the fish are "gulping" it usually means they are having a hard time getting enough oxygen from the water. High ammonia levels in the water is damaging to the gill tissue...making it hard for them to breathe. Ammonia comes from the waste little oscars make. Keep in mind, keeping an oscar is kind of like keeping a St. Bernard...they're awefully cute but you have to feed 'em and clean up after 'em with a coal shovel.
A good water change is generally called for.

So, how big are your babies? How long have you had them? When was the last water change? What kind of pump ? (they are suppose to suck ;) ) What kind of filtration?

i change the water at least once a week and when i change it i use the hose to suck up all the crap.

the filter is the kind u stick those cotton things in with the carbon in them it should be suitible
and the pump i dont no but it seems to do what it is exspose to although i dont no how it works does not seem to have an intake
but it makes bubbles i found all my stuff in my basement

i also have live plants could they cause problems

I AGREE. increase ur water change intervals & filtration.
