What does it mean when my tiger oscar's color flushes out of him? His normally black looking areas turn green almost yellow. Is it an expression of mood or emotion?

My oscar does that when ever he gets spooked or is stressed out. It doesn't usually last long before he's back to his darker colors acting like a tough guy again.

That is perfectly normal. Oscars are very moody fishes and they show it in their body color. Sometimes when i first turn the tank light off or i do a water change my Oscar will turn almost completely greyish and will sit on his side on the bottom of the tank...It is perfectly normal and thats just the way oscars are!

Thanks for the info! The tank he's in is a 90 with three tinfoil barbs and a Pleco and I've had them in this tank only for several months now. The Oscar is about a year old now. I worried that my water perameters might be askew but every time he turns bright yellow and I test the water everthing is fine. I'm happy to hear your comments, Zach, because that's excactly how mine behaves and I'm glad that it's normal! Thanks again.

I am so glad to hear your comments, too, Zach! I am a new "Oscar Mamma" & was hoping someone would tell me that this was a normal behavior for them. I have seen the act of "playing dead" in front of certain people that they didn't like, but had never seen the color wash out & then reappear. I did a partial water change tonight & noticed that the lighter of my 2 looked all most albino afterwards  I started to stress out a little, but his color came back before I could worry too much.

Thanks again to the answer Zach & for asking the question Murphster! ;)
