Don't know if anyone else has experienced this but i thought i'd share it as its the strangest set of events i've ever witnessed from any of my fish.
About 2 months ago i transfered my four male guppys into a new tank. the water flow is a little stronger than their old tank but they really seemed to enjoy it. they spend all day doing the usual guppy stuff; play fighting and darting around in the part of the tank with the current, and general group mucking about that guppies are known for.
But at night if i ever glanced over at the tank (the new tank's in my bedroom) i never really saw any activity. Nothing special as they always used to calm down for a night's kip in the old tank.
But about 2 weeks ago i got up in the middle of the night and saw my purple guppy sat down in the gravel. I crapped myself and figured he must be ill but as soon as i opened the lid and put a hand in, he and his 3 friends did their usual thing of dancing between my fingures and picking at my skin with their little mouths. So I left him to it and hoped he was ok.
In the morning everything was the same as normal in the tank and all 4 guppys were as hyper as usual, so i thought no more of it.
A couple of days later I got up in the middle of the night again and he was still on the floor but this time one of his mates was sleeping with him. Then about a week ago I got up again and there was 3 of them all asleep on the gravel. Then last night i checked on them at about 3am and all 4 were happilly asleep in a little bundle on the bottom of the tank.
They're all as active as ever so I'm sure nothing's wrong. I just think that over time the strange little buggers have - through a need for companionship, and due to one of them being a bit of a free thinker - started deciding to do their best to sleep on the floor.
They can't trully sit on the bottom as, if you watch them carefully you see their bodies are still naturally bouyant and wont stay down as easilly as a bottom dwellers. They also get bored once in a while and one or two of them will go of for a quick wander before re-joining the sleeping group, but it's a really cool thing to see as its really sweet to see them all sleeping together.
I'll get a picture of them as soon as i can as it's one of the funniest things i've seen them do.
