I have a 55 Gal tank. It has 1 1/2 inches of gravel, bubble wall, skelton air bubbler, 3 plastic plants. golf ball, basketball orniment and a fake wood cave with fake plants on it in the tank. I also have 2 whisper ex70 filers in the tank. I have only had my tank up for about a month now. I have cleaned the gravel and did a 25% water change on it. We have 10 fish and 1 crab in the tank. It is making my house smell nasty, my husband says he doesn't smell it, but I can when I come home from being out of the house for even an hour. What can I do to make the smell go away???

+1 to petluvr

You need to do weekly water changes on your tank as a general rule, but if yours smells, definitely do water changes daily until the smell is gone. A healthy tank has a little "natural" earthy smell or none at all. If you can smell it, there is something really off. I smell barely anything on my tanks, and that's only if my nose is pressed right up to nearly touching the water.

Agree with above responses. With the possible exception....do you have green slimy algae? Cyanobacter smells horrendous....that was the only time I could smell any of my tanks.

Sniff the tank. Does the tank/water smell?? You can try running more carbon, that can remove smells.

What does it smell like?? Musty??

Its your poor method of fitration. Go to ebay and get this http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-STAGE-EXT...600?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a19bfd90

HOB filters just suck, only 1 line of filtration. Typically when odor is present it means the carbon needs replacing.

Hmmm. On my 125 tank I have 1 HOB and 2 canisters. I over filter the crap out of it and I also do weekly, and sometimes multiple times a week, water changes. My HBO has both mechanical and biological. Filtration does NOT mean you don't have to change your water. Water changes are the ONLY way to keep a tank healthy and balanced. There are certain things in water that filtration...either a 3 stage canister (which I have) or HOB...just simply cannot remove for any reason.
I also think it's irresponsible and dangerous to ever tell people new to fish keeping that water changes are not needed. :irked:

None of this is true.

HOB filters have come a long way. AquaClear filters, for example. You can stuff those workhorses full of mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration aids. They are excellent filters for half the price.

Weekly water changes are crucial to maintaining a healthy tank. Please don't tell anyone different... especially folks that are new to the hobby. Their tank will crash in about a year, or perhaps even sooner, as TDS shoot through the roof.

+1  Exactly what I was trying to say only far better wording. Thank you.

Not to mention when OTS (Old tank syndrome) hits and the whole thing crashes.
