I have two corys who spend most of their time in a castle. One of them comes out occasionally, the other almost never (I pick up the castle during water changes to check on him). Today I was testing my water and the one was out in the front of the tank. I took a close look at him and realized his fins are very damaged! Mostly his tail fin and the one on his back - I'm sorry, I don't know the proper names! Who is doing this to him? What should I do? Do they grow back? - dumb question, I'm sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

They'll grow back, but not likely as nice as before. I don't know what in your tank would be munching on them though. My corys got munched by a barb and now they look ok, but before their fins were all tattered.

I've seen this before in another tank. it could be other fish fin-nipping, but my guess would be poor water conditions. how often do you do water changes and how much? Most tanks need about 25% change once a week with dechlorinated water. if you post your pH, alkalinity, hardness, nitrite and nitrate levels we can make a better diagnosis
if the fins are not compleately gone they should grow back if you improve tank conditions
ps the fin on a fishes back is called the dorsal

Your blue flame and fruitloop tetra's are, I believe, in reality black skirt tetra's, which have a well deserved reputation as fin nippers. If it was a water quality issue I would think that other fish would be affected as well.

my beunos aries tetras were beating up on my angels and my cory all the time had to separate them beleive it or not. the guy at the lfs said it wouldnt happen I watched, he was wrong.

Thanks for all the input! My water conditions are quite good I think - I do a water change every week or two. My pH is 8 and very stable. Nitrites and ammonia are nil and my nitrates hover around 10. I'm glad to hear the fins will grow back! I have wondered if it is the tetras because they all seem to hang out in the same corner. The cory seems healthy otherwise. I know one of my tetras is quite a bully when the food arrives- chasing everyone away. Perhaps it's him.....I'll have to keep an eye out! Thanks again.
