hi please help my 2 male goldfish are ramming my female goldfish its quite upsetting to watch so i have moved her out they have always been together and this has never happened my tanks is 180 ltr i have 6 goldfish in it 2 are 1 inch the ramming ones are 3 inch long please help as im new to having goldfish and i dont understand what is happening thanks

they are trying to get the female to release eggs! it looks bad but i promise it wont hurt the female. You have 6 fancy goldfish in a 180 litre? they may also be doing this more due to the small nature of the tank. My males do chase the females from time to time but usually during seasons changing etc.

i have 4 fishh at 3inch long 2 at 1 inch in this tank is the tank to small for them its a 180 litre tank thanks

keep them together as its just natural what they are doing really! The tank is too small, I have mine in a 240 litre tank and thats prob going to be pushing it when they are all fully grown :(

hi thanks for the reply can you tell what this inch of gallon rule is im very new to this and i dont understand as i thought my tank was big enough im really worried now many thanks

people use several rules/opinions for goldfish. Are yours fancy or common (single tailed) Personally i use the rule of 10gallons per fish for fancy golldfish but others say they need more. I have 6 in a 63 and I honestly think they will be good in there as one of them hasnt grown too much in a year at all so i cant see it being a big fish :) others would say I was wrong however

A common rule is 20 gallons for the first goldfish, then 10 gallons for each additional fish. I disagree with this, since I don't think 30 gallons is enough room for two goldfish. I would not keep goldfish of any kind in anything less than a 4 foot tank, since even fancy goldfish grow to 8" when fully mature. They are long lived fish, so deserve the extra space to live in good health for their long lifespan. They also produce lots of ammonia for their size, and are very deep bodied...which is why they need more space than most other fish.

Anyway, assuming the bare minimum, you would need at least a 75 gallon tank for 6 fancy goldfish. I would say you need more like an 120 gallon tank for this many goldfish, and a 6 foot tank. That's 455 liters.

Is there any way you can trade some back in to your store? Best to do it while they are small.

For your sized tank, I think two goldfish is plenty in the long run...you can keep three or four while they are young, but as they grow they will need to be thinned out, otherwise you are going to have water quality trouble and possible stunting.

I do agree they need space but it all depends on how much they grow. I am going to see how it goes over time as I did when i upgraded the last tank :) I think 120gal may be a tad large of them......but you may well be right :)

But these rules for sizes all account for grownup fish which I find annoying when you consider full grown can be a foot or two. An gallon per inch is more reasonable as an absolute minimum, though I agree a 20 gallon is probably the minimum for keeping goldfish if you don't want to change water excessively or you have a larger one. Obviously more is better but 6 little goldfish in a 50 gallon tank is hardly overcrowded. You can blame tank size on bad water condition but if you overfeed it won't matter how big the tank is.
