Hi I'm new to the board.

I'm setting up a 40B for Indian mud skippers. I'm wondering what every one would recamend for a filter? I have a canister filter and I thought about having a spray bar trickle down the background. I also thought about making a little box in the corner for a hang on filter. So it would not get wet. Then make it in to a water fall. I have also heard of using a UGF and hooking the intake of the filter up to the tube on the UGF.

The next question I have is should I divide the beach/land from the water? I have seen both types done on skipper tanks. I plan on using sand.

I could even divide the land and water. Then put a UGF in the water side with gravel then sand on top of it. Using the canister filter.

I'm just not sure what would work the best as this is the first type of tank like this I have done. I have set up poison dart frog tanks before though. But they never had a water section.

Also in the land section is there some thing I can use to fill up the tank so I don't have to use so much sand?

Sorry my first post is so long but I just want to do this right the first time.

Thanks

I believe you can use floating islands for mudskippers as well, which would allow for more water.

I'd go for the canister filter with a spray bar, personally. Easier to clean the filter without disturbing everything else in the tank.

Thanks fro the reply.

I'm trying to go for a natural looking tank. So I would prefer to skip the floating dock things.

I'm leaning more toward the canister filter. But I would really like a waterfall in the tank vs the spray bar. I'm just not sure how to do it.

Powerhead?

Build the return with PVC, then you can direct it however you want.

In terms of reducing the amount of sand needed--you can put tank fish safe item in there that you want. Get plastic boxes, fill with water, submerge and cover. You'll likely need to figure out a way to keep the sand in place, or it will all just flow to the lowest point anyway.

Sand on top of grvel wont work as with time, sand will be on the bottom of gravel.

Why dont you look into mud from Mud System? It should still be around.
Or get you own mud/make your own mud/mix of mud with sand (long time to collect enough skimmate from PS).

It isnt easy to keep sand the way your would like as sand will level itself out eventually (erosion???).

Creating water fall should not be too difficult with canister as you can pile/stack some rocks on one corner as would do in terrarium. Place strainer behind the rocks out of view then return the water onto rock piles.

Only problem with water falls in salt/brackish is salt build up around the fall which will drop SG in time. Cleaning and maintaining may be PIA. Something to consider.

If only keeping mudskippers and some inverts, you may be able to get away with internal filter but depends on the actual volume of water and waste produced by inhabitants..

If you would like you could bury return tubing/modified PVC under the mud from land side corner where vertical portion of tubing/pvc can easily be camouflaged by rocks/plants/deco. You should be able to find some Mangroves which will have very natural looks as well as to camouflage green tubing (eheim).

If willing, you may be able to create gentle high/low tides (mud only) but requires few more gadgets and extra container/tank above the main tank. Such system maybe bit noisy for some but was nerve calmer at least for me.
But with high/low tides system, you should be able to keep inverts such as clams, certain burrowing octopus, worms, etc.

Top tank can be used to hold other creatures as well, even nano reef.

Hope this helped a bit

Yes but I didnt know it cost that much (10lbs for $80) lately. Find your own if near shore/marsh land.

I live in Minnesota. Ill stick to the sand. I think I can make just the sand work.

Here are some pics of my build progress.

The PVC in the left corner will be the water fall. I will also have a drip wall all the way across the back of the tank.

Even sludge from lake should do but it maybe too cold up there already.

Nice Job for little boy, LOL! Just teasing. Bet he cant wait to see MS flapping around.

Dont know if you saw the thread on RCC in brackish section. Cool idea with rock barrier.

Hope all goes well and looking forward to finished product.

He loves getting his pic taken. He also loves any thing to do with fish. We all are getting excited to get the tank done.

Thanks every one.

What is RCC any way? I keep hearing about it but cant figure out what it is.
