moving tanks

Yes it is, there are many options you have. The easiest in my opinion is go get a bunch of fish bags, net fish, put in bags put in cooler drain tank and move. As long as you keep the filters material wet you won't lose much of the beneficial bacteria.

Just think of it just like buying a new fish and taking it home in the bag, except your moving from your house to your house. that and keeping the filter damp.

I moved mine in coolers and buckets because they were too big for bags. Left the water in my canister filters to keep the BB alive. Just moved at the end of May and it was a 100% success so no worries!

i moved two 55 gallons in the fall of 2009. lots of fish including some big guys (including an oscar who was about 8 inches at the time).

smaller fish, snails, shrimp, and all my plants went into a 20 gallon rubbermaid, filled about half full, with the lid on. bigger fish each got their own 2 gallon bucket, with lid! canister filters i unhooked, left full of water, and hooked back up as is at the new place. hob filters got their media tossed into a 5 gallon bucket filled with tank water, and media was put back in hobs as is with no rinsing. tanks got pretty much drained completely, with maybe an inch of water left at most. substrate and large decor (wood, etc) was left in the tanks. missed a few green shrimp when catching all the fish/critters and they survived being transported in an inch of water, open tank, open bed truck, on a cold, dreary, and slightly rainy day, lol. the rubbermaid and buckets of fish were transported in the truck's cab, without any air conditioning running.

for your situation, i'd just do a rubbermaid tub for all your fish (and plants if you have any). drain the tank, don't bother saving any water (setting the tank back up will be like a huge water change for your fish). follow the details in my above paragraph for filter/filter media moving.

good luck with the move!

My largest move was from NY to Fla. Put all the fish into coolers and used peroxide every so often during the trip. Used the water to start up the tank when I got here. Didn't lose any. But this was back in 83. Things were not so high tech back then and we didn't know you couldn't do things. We just did them.

What size tank? How many tanks? How many fish? How far a move?

Can't ya freeze dry them then add water at the other end...:evil_lol:

I vote appropriate sized buckets or coolers.

if you are matching the temperature to the bins or buckets the fish are in, don't do anything to buffer your water at all, and are using Prime to dechlorinate, then the fish can go in right away. think of it as a huge water change for them.

I've got African cichlids ant that very sensitive to water temperatures and water conditions. It is a 25g tank mostly rocks and river sand plastic plants because cichlids dig up my plants. The filter is a 200g per hour canister filter.
