I've been reading a lot of different things about moon lights in catalogues and magazines and i'm curious if anyone could give me any details on these special lights? Are they beneficial, do they look good?? Any info or pics would be greatly appreciated!

The "DIY" kits I've seen use blue LEDs, and can project light fairly deep. However, I've only seen them used on reef/SW aquariums (LFS has one tank with a moonlight) and it sounds as if it is actually beneficial to the SW tank. I believe some corals/anems feed during the night, as do some gobies and puffers, so the moonlighting helps promote this natural instinct.

Here's a good DIY moonlight site:

As I said, no idea what it'd do for a FW setup, but it will certainly add illumination during an otherwise dark time!

I have a system set up on my FW and it does make a cool effect at night. It also made my fish more active during the day. I built my own and I used 9 plue LED's for a 48" tank. I made acrylic housings for them and they cover the entire tank. The key to putting moonlight in is you need to leave some dark spots so if your fish do not want the light then they can hide out. If you need any info on how to build a system let me know, I have built and sold numerous systems.

I really like my DIY moonlighting I bought, what i did was bought a 12" blue neon light(designed for use in cars) and put a layer of masking tape around the tube, ran the positive and ground wires to an extra computer power suply i had(you could also use an old phone charger or something of the sort, as long as it puts out 12 volts. It woks great, and i simply just put it under my light housing fits fine and doesnt push on the bulb or anything. The place I bought the light from was www.oznium.com, great site to order from as I have ordered from them in the past and they have a few options of lights you could use, such as single leds, cold cathodes, neons, etc. They also have a forum to post on if you have any guestions.

alright, thanks for the help guys...i will be checking into this and let you know if i need anymore help!

Also if anybody wants to see what a FW system looks like at night send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will send you a pic. I would post a pic but have not been able to get it to work right.

I got mine here: http://www.proaquatica.com/proddetail.php?prod=505001

It's cool becuase it's completely sealed and can be mounted on side of tank or underside of glass canopy. I was lucky, my two-bulb light fixture had just enough space to put the moonlight between the bulbs, so it just rests on the glass top and I put the light canopy on top.

Both lights (white and moon) are on timers. It does give a very cool look.
