How big can melon swords get. I don't mind vertical growth. More concerned about horizontal growth. I know amazon swords can take over smaller tanks. Interested for my 55g planted.
I've never heard of a melon sword but wiht most plants if you let them grow they will grow tall and thin. Normally if you over trim them they become fatter and wider (check the dif in the two E.Behleri in the link on my 30g -either side of the tank at the back - on on the left has been left to it)
When I purchased my Melons, I was told 7" high 13" diameter, I have one that is past the 13" mark pretty easily, and John R. Has one of my split offs that is bigger than any of mine. I would not heisitate to put one in a 55g with enough light, but be prepared to trim once in a while. I have 1 each in my ten and 15g, and once a month or so I cut off all of the big outer leaves and let only the center starters remain. it takes less than a week for the plant to look good again, and 3-4 weeks before it gets too big for those small tanks.
Since the plant grows from the center out there seems to be no ill effects with trimming off the biggest leaves routinely.

Any pics daveedka? I see too many pics of swords grown emersed (lower part in water, upper out of water) then they change when grown underwater completely :mad2: . I've seen pics of melon swords, but don't know if they are what it will look like in the tank.
I'm home this week, I'll get a pic on this thread tonight. I really like my red melons, especially the one I have in high light tanks. Deep deep red leaves very neat growth patterns.
