I should have known since Marimo balls are a type of clado algae. This could probably be the reason why I had clado growing everywhere in my tank.

So now, the clado ball is out of the tank and into a glass jar on the window sill in the kitchen. Hopefully this decreases the likelihood of clado outbreaks in the tank.

I would just scrub it down. What's the point of buying a 5 dollar ball of cool looking algea if you don't have it in your aquarium. Besides, if you put any still water in full sunlight you will get even more algea, like green water.

I had that problem...I regret ever putting those things in my tank. They inundate my anubias over the course of the week in between water changes. We're about to start trying a fert dosing regime to try and get the plants outcompeting the clado, the tank is a freakin mess.

Well, it wasn't me who bought it. :) It just came with the tank when I bought the whole setup. Quite frankly, I thought it looked out of place in there.

Besides, it looks nice in the glass jar now. If a secondary (or tertiary) purpose of a Marimo ball is a nutrient sponge, how could green water occur in the same jar as a Marimo ball?

I read on an algae ID site that the presence of a Marimo ball can cause clado to grow in tanks.

Most of the clado was removed when I moved the tank back home from school. It dried out on the piece of driftwood and I just pulled it off. I also had to scrub some off the more stubborn spots.

That's very odd that an algae ball would cause an algae outbreak. It should actually do just the opposite and suck out nutrients. Why not just collect all of the algae, smash it together, and sell it? They are quite wanted.
