A few questions about Maracyn Plus.

Does it treat gram positive and gram negative bacteria? Is it okay for scaleless fish? Is it effective on Columaris? Can it be used in addition to Jungle Anti-Bacteria Food? Why is it
Much more preferred to a combination of Maracyn (erythromycin) and Maracyn 2 (minocycline)
?

Does anyone know if it's safe to use in a tank with amphibians?

Thanks!

Maracyn Plus contains a sulfa-based antibiotic and trimethoprim. They both have activity against gram + and - pathogens. As to why it's better than combining Maracyns I and II that depends on what you consider better. It would certainly be simpler to use a single product, but as to efficacy I doubt there's an advantage one way or another.

Gram staining is just another way of differntiating/categorizing bacteria into +/- groups. That does not mean we only need two types of antibiotic; one against + and another against - as there are so many antibiotics avail/necessary as per specific pathogens/infections/diseases.
Without laboratory apparatus, it is either wild guess or educated guess as per individual's knowledges/experiences but Try to identify diseases/infections to one's best ability as per symptoms/behavioral changes displayed by fish in question.
Once pathogen(s) are identified/determined as per one's observations/evaluations/analysis, should be able to find more effective treatment/med rather than Shotgun approach or simple correction of water conditions may do the tricks.

Why people used combination of Maracyn I and II, I never understood as such shotgun approach/practices should be avoided in order to minimize the chance of creating/developing SUPERBACTERIA in near future. It may have happened already and/or happening as we speak due to what I consider a very irresponsible practices carried out by misinformed individuals..

Afa, treating salmander with MOST anitibiotics in their own tank w/o fish shouldnt be a problem unless specified by mfr, however, I would try to avoid treating fish/amphibians in the same tank as much as possible.
I dont recollect if I ever treated both in same tanks but have done many in appropriately set up h/t.

What each antibiotic/med works best on which pathogens/diseases/infections, read the info provided mfr or you can simply google ingredients to find more detailed facts. Another way to learn in depth imo, that is if willing.

Hope this helped a bit!

Thinking to myself here: I'll probably put the minnow into a hospital tank for a while until the 10 gallon can go through enough water changes to completely get rid of old water possibly carrying the disease. Or I can call the mfr and ask if it's safe for amphibians.

I remember my other question now. When using Maracyn Plus, do I have to do water changes during treatment?

Wishful thought, perhaps by all!:D

Read the instruction???:D

Well, normally I would but I haven't bought any yet.
