Sexing:
There are many ways to sex a Platy (these sexing methods, by the way, can be applied to all livebearers), but there are two that are more widely used than others. The first method is to observe the shape of the Platy, Females will be longer, and also have wider stomachs (even when not pregnant) than males. The second method (and most accurate) involves observing the three fins on the underbelly of the fish. Female Platy’s will have three almost identical fins, two a little further up the belly (closer to the front) than the rear, and with a male, the two frontal fins will be the same, but the aft fin will be much smaller, and pointed.

Depends on if you can and want to deal with fry. All male or females is fine if you don't.

This works with all other livebearers too. Males have a little "stick" (gonopondium?) while Females have a wide fin in that same area.

I have males and females in my tank. for months nothing all got along fine.... then came babies...every where. I say stick to one sex only unless you want a lot of fry :) Oh and I am giving them away no stop. yep my fish are baby factories

Sorry Dave but it only works well with poeciliids. Goodeids do not have a gonopodium, instead they have a split in that same fin where the front part of the anal fin is shorter than the back part. Goodeidae means split fin. Functionally it is used much the same but it looks very different and if you are used to only poeciliids, it is confusing trying to sex them. The females also do not store sperm like a common livebearer but need to be freshly impregnated each time.

Yea, look at the fins. I have 3 F, and 1 Male in my Planted 10G, and all 3 F are pregnant lol.
