I've finally decided to upgrade my old frogs accommodation!
I was going to build a new enclosure for my crabs, but they can wait.
Frog has been in the same tank since 1989 so I think she deserves an upgrade first.

this is a recent pic of her having a swim with the fishes-

as you can see she has no eyes. She only ever had one eye, but she lost that in 2007 to an infection.
She has coped very well with her blindness, and still gets around ok and has no trouble eating.

For the new enclosure I'm planning something a little different..
The actual enclosure is going to be made of foam sandwiched in a steel-mesh reinforced cement render.
I'm making a bigger pond with the same materials, and I can use the off cuts for this project.
The sides are probably going to be fibreglass fly screen, depending on whether its cat proof.

For the inside I'm going to use the same technique that I used for a little vertical garden on my pond.
Which is basically growing plants in synthetic felt, a technique developed by Patrick Blanc.
The plants will be local native ferns and mosses, similar to what I had in my old vivarium.

I'm going to make fake branches and roots. All the non-planted land area will be fake wood.

here is a freehand sketch I came up with-

the picture is missing the door and some beams.

The enclosure is going to outside in a semi-exposed position, which is one reason why it's going to be different from standard enclosures.

I'm expecting this to be a very complex build, and I imagine it won't be finished until ummmmm..........

I didn't know that frogs lived to be 20 years old?! That is amazing. You are one heck of a frog keeper.

Thats a way cool sketch... The real devil's in the details as the planning goes forward...

Check out my terrarium build for ideas on how you might build that habitat very inexpesively.

The threads are here: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220587

and here: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/v...-introduction-build-125-gallon-terrarium.html

Both of these threads and forums detail how I am building my terrarium (125 Gallon tank) Pay particular attention to the background ... it can be colored with tempura paint or concrete pigments (solids not liquids) to any color you could imagine, not just black like I chose to do. Using the pigments in the foam it will bind with and be encapsulated in the foam and will not leach out into your tank or vivarium. The textures one can achieve are limitless.

Best wishes

Wes

Looks awesome!

Great job keeping your frog that long. I look forward to seeing this build!
