I love live plants, but when I put them in my tank the first and only time, it seemed like it killed off many of my fish. That is the only thing I can possibly link it to, as the fish were 100% healthy (or so I thought) until the plants started to grow. It was really upsetting to me because everything was going really, really well.

Do aquarium plants do something to affect the water?

aquarium plants will lower the TDS in the water, remove carbon dioxide-making a ph fluctuation if the Kh is too low. they shouldnt just kill your fish though...unless they were decomposing and you didnt tell that part, that would raise the organics in the water. were you dosing ferts? give it a try with some hardy species like vallisineria or java fern.

Hmm, plants generally only help fish tanks. So it's possible that the die off was due to something else, i.e water changes, dechlorinator, temp swings. I imagine it's possible that the plants brought in something like a pesticide, soap, etc. depending on where you got it from.

But I'm more inclined to believe it's something other then your plants that killed your fish.

Plants do not kill fish. Period..unless you put terrestrials in and they rot and sour your water quality. If you have healthy aqautic plants in your tank they will not dies as a reult of plants. It is something else.
