Leaky Eheim 2217, bad o-ring

Before buying a new o-ring, unscrew the fitting (empty filter of course) and remove existing o-ring, clean it and apply some light lube, regular Vaseline if you don't have dedicated aquarium lube. Also clean the housing area before threading the fitting back in. When you reinstall the fitting, screw it in until it starts to compress the o-ring slightly and is in the position you need it to be. The o-ring acts as a gasket and does NOT need to be tight like regular pipe fittings.

I'm not sure if the Eheim part #7250600 for the output fitting under the head cover also fits the threaded intake elbow. I keep a list of Eheim filter parts in a book and unfortunately I don't have that o-ring listed separately.

Thanks for your feedback! Yes the elbow has been cleaned and layered with silicon grease and turned in snug but not tight. I’ve turned the elbow left and right a bit this morning and the dripping ceased, but I’m not taking chances on another flood.

The #7250600 part number I found as well but also unsure if same part for the intake elbow. Hopefully someone has tried and could confirm.

I would replace the filter, but that's just me lol

No reason to replace the filter just for an o-ring!! :(

nvision nvision , the part # I gave you above is smaller than the one you need. The intake fitting o-ring is also a different size than the ones used on the Q.D. valves. I just checked both parts on an unused 2217.

Push comes to shove you could always buy the new fitting IF you need it now or wait until you have time and try to find a replacement o-ring somewhere. The best bet would be an industrial supply shop near you or maybe even SCUBA?

I do keep a running 2217 in a large plastic bowl as sometimes after cleaning I get a drip or two from that area and it lets me keep an eye on it until it seals up again. ;)

Thanks Dudley. I will keep an eye on it.

The filter is brand new. Yeah it’s ridiculous that we have to take precautions with buckets and stuff in fear of products failing. For a filter design that’s over 30yrs old, I would expect Eheim to improve build quality and QA.

I did not realize this filter was brand new and yes that would be unacceptable to me also.

Did you notice if the box was factory sealed? I ask as I have heard others complaints that either parts were missing or there were used parts in already opened boxes regardless of equipment brand.

If you bought local or online, file a friendly complaint to see if you can get some redress either in a filter replacement or at least parts.

One other thing, I looked at your pic again and it appears that fitting is screwed in very far to me. Usually the flange is flush or slightly recessed in the canister housing port opening. Is it possible you have it screwed in too far and it is squishing or distorting the o-ring and that is what is causing the leak?

It's just plastic on plastic, if the thread isn't damaged possibly the elbow just needs another turn. There is no need to buy anything new though or to worry; I have had these Eheims running almost continuously for 30 to 35 years, yes the same filters with the same parts. Silicon grease is good for the gasket, for the elbows use teflon tape:

No need to worry, they use this for plumbing....

The filter and parts seem fine and nothing looks too peculiar from the package. You really think the elbow is screwed in too far? I was being mindful about how snug the elbow is and at this position the tension is not very snug at all.

Loach, thx for the teflon tip. Curious if that would add stress to the media housing? Sadly I have very little faith on quality of this filter right now.
