my lampeye tetras were all eating fine up till today when i noticed one of them trying desperately to swim downwards for no particular reason. instead of the usual horizontal position it has when it swims, it was now swimming vertically! i removed it and put it in the QT with a general medication inside. i'm unsure what's wrong with it. could any one help? thanks. after a night its now at at the surface of the QT still alive but barely making it.

also would whatever it has spread to the other lampeye tetras or my neons?

p.s it had a white string of what i thought looked like white transparent poo stringing behind it since last night. and its spine is now slightly curved

If I understand your description correctly, it sound like a swim bladder problem. Do a search for "swim bladder" in the forums and you should find a whole bunch of posts about this condition.

Best of luck.

but i thought if it was swim bladder, the fish would have difficulty swimming plus a bulging body? but what is wrong with my lampeye tetra is that it is bent into half! looks like a bent paper clip. it refuses to eat. and has been at the surface of my sick tank but its not gasping for air. if you peer into the tank. it would try to swim down. but other then that it has been alive for 2 days but not eating and in that bent shape.

could it be internal parasite? what should i watch for in case my other fishes gets it?

thanks for the help!!

I think I misunderstood your description. I thought that you meant that the fish had trouble remaining upright, which would most likely be swim bladder or lateral line desease.

I have seen some fish that look like they have been bent in half. For me, this problem has occured when one fish attacked another. I had a gourmai attack another gourmai, who looked bent. That fish only lived for a few days. Might be something else though if you haven't had agression problems.

mmm. i doubt it has been attack because the only other thing in my tank is two cories and 5 neons and 4 lampeye tetras! its still alive and eating now. just that it can't swim upright

if i can;t cure it, do you think its better for me to end its life?

thanks for all the help!
