Hi Everyone:

I noticed that my Kuhli Loach has a bulging mass on her side today. I believe it has only been there for about a week, but I'm not quite sure since I don't see her very often. Behavior and food intake seems fairly normal. The mass is only on one side and is slightly translucent allowing me to see small green eggs inside. She is the only Kuhli I have in the tank and I have had her for almost a year. Tank mates include tetras and a pleco. Everyone else seems to be doing fine. Anyway, please advise. :help:

What size tank is your fish in? When do you do water changes? Water parameters? Thanks

And about that infection, hmm, not too sure, but, try these medications.

Maracyn plus.

Or you can try

Maracyn 2

Try giving medicated food too. Here's a tip.

Squeeze some Gel-Tek ultra Cure PX to the food and feed them...

I have done force-feeding, but thats a pretty big loach, huh.

Welcome to Aquarium Central by the way..

Aren't loach eggs green?
It's the kuhlis. Yes, that is true for kuhlis. The problem I've noticed on pics is the white blob on the skin. I'm still not sure what exactly it is. Will have to try researching about this one.

its comming from inside the body

After a talk with another member here, here's their observation. That is a rupture of the body cavity. There is no telling whether it could be parasitic or bacterial or even both. Treat the tank water with kanacyn and food with piperazine. As far as the chances of survival, difficult to tell.

Good luck Diamondcut :o ...

Good luck, Diamond. It looks like there's just skin covering that hole. It'd be a shame to lose such a pregnant kuhli, you can see the green tint all along her side. If she pulls through, you might want to breed her.

Thanks all for your input! I was talking to a few other fellow loach keepers and they suggested a hernia, probably due to mechanical trauma. Since she tries to squeeze through everything, and is full with eggs, that definitely seems like a possibility. I'm gonna watch her for a few more days before medicating. I've also removed most of the rocks, plants, etc from the tank to reduce the chance of her trying to squeeze into something too small again.
