Is there such a fish called a king midas? A customer came in the pet store where i work and brought in a king midas cichlid. I never heard of a king midas. I've heard of a midas cichlid. How big do they get? I thought they got around 8 inches long. But I looked up online and it says they get 12 inches.
He's a beautiful fish and looks like he was well taken care of. He's about 5 and a half to 6 inches long now. The guy was keeping him in a 45 or 47 gallon tank. We're trying to find someone who has at least a 75 gallon tank to take him, but it would be better if he went into a larger tank of course. Would a 75 gallon be big enough for him? If I had a 75 gallon tank I'd take him but unfornately i don't lol. I just wanna make sure he goes to a good home.

He meant Midas cichlid which is similar to the red devil cichlid or a cross of both. Yes, they do grow to 8 inches but can also grow to more than that if conditions permit it. A 75g is fine for one. I wouldn't add any other fish in it considering its temperament.

Good luck.:)

i'd assume it will be around a foot or so

well he's been adopted this afternoon. The guy that took him has a 100 gallon tank. He has another midas cichlid and some type of shark. So I think he went to a good home.

I'm no expert, by far, but the attached were sold to me via Pet Smart as Gold Midas/King Midas/South American Midas Cichlids...semi aggressive, max size 6-8", 30 gal + tank, "intermediate" ...flake, bloodworm diet...bla bla bla..

These guys have just about doubled in size in the past month or so, and are rather mean. I mentioned in another thread, they tore up my chinese algae-eater...I mean TORE UP, a small firemouth, and a rather pretty (and expensive) Severum...The latter wasn't much smaller than these guys (2-3 inches smallest to largest)...they ate him alive in a frenzy...and they were WELL (over) fed...before I added the Severum...they cornered him as a group, and nipped his eyes out first...it was surreal to view...they even attacked the net when I tried to fetch him out... Then again, they don't seem to mind anyone else! You can see the size of the little convict here. They don't bother with him at all. (???)

From what I've learned here, I'm in for a rough time with these guys as they mature.

Oops, I apologise. That convict is about TWICE the size of the "little" convict...even still, they don't fuss with the little guy...

Those look a lot like my red devil. Often times they miss marked the red devil and the midas cichlid. I have both. My female red devil is about 6" and my midas is 10". Last year they mated and had a ton of babies. Since then every time that the have laid eggs the fish in the rest of the tank feast on caviar. The red devil has a longer head the midas has a more blunt face.

The only thing that I'm concerned with is that they can be very aggressive toward other fish of the same species and other fish in general. My 125 gal sometimes is to small when the midas has a wild hair up his butt. He pushes my 13" tilapia butterkofferi around. I call my tank the ghetto because you have to be one bad dude to survive. We have had those two (tilapia butterkofferi & the Midas) together for over 5 years.

The first pictue is of a midas cichlid, the second a red devil

Funny you should mention that! When I was trying to get some info on these guys, the Midas pics I found looked A LOT more like what PS was selling as Red Devils, and their "Red Devils" (much bigger fellas than the ones I bought) looked just like mine and the adult photos on PS's Midas tanks.

I've seen the aggression first hand already! They don't really seem to bother with each other though, even in their new "solitary confinement" (TEMPORARY I PROMISE!) 30g... I had to get them out b/4 they whiped out the GTs and the RTS. It's odd that they didn't mess with either of the cons, but were terrorising the poor GTs (both much bigger than either of the cons). I'm not sure who got that nip on the top Midas/Devil's tail fin though...hmmmm! Maybe the GTs started it! * nervous laugh *
