Hey i have this great (hopefully) idea. I thought about keeping fish in a med-lg sized kiddie pool over this summer. Mainly i'm talking about some of my goldfish fry and catfish. I also wanted to keep a kiddie pool in the house that contains local minnows and crayfish. What do ya'll think????? This way i can keep plants, raise some fish, and raise crayfish which i feed to various fish i have....mainly my madtom. I'll also have to think up a way to filter it without having to buy a pond filter....maybe a DIY filter that uses a power head???? I've got all kinds of ideas floating in my head........but the others involve a lot of something.....money. This one doesn't. So how about it??? If you have any ideas like this one or ideas about how to filter it let me know.
I need a hobby..........

Well you sure have a creative idea going! I am not sure how well it would work though. What type of kiddie pool would you use? The soft blow up plastic kind or the hard, thin plastic type? Would either of the materials made in/for the plastic be toxic to the fish....this I am not sure of, and would be skeptical and check it out. I have found especially with the soft blow up kiddie pools, that they are easily punctured/naturally creates leaks....you'd have to think of back up plans and preventitive measures before putting fish or live plants inside. Just thought I'd share a couple of my concerns with the idea, and as I said before, it is very creative. Good luck,
mt_marcy!

I'm talking abou the hard plastic kinds. I doubt they contain anything harmful to fish. Unless they've started to make them out of a different platic or have used a different paint for the designs. Hmmm good points. I'll check em out.

Hee hee! Kiddie pool! Money FLOATING around! :D

I don't think it would be harmful, I mean they make those things for babies. They put EVERYTHING in their mouths.

Sounds like a cool idea! ... If you don't have cats!!

ive heard of people using kiddie pools to winter their pond fish (it gets too cold here in MN to leave them out year round unless you build your pond the right way). i also know a lot more people who use horse troughs (the plastic ones, not metal) and have mounted power filters on them or using canister filters or marineland sponge filters. just some ideas. good luck with your project.

I used to keep 2 goldfish in a kiddy pool, I bent one side up against the wall and put a power filter on it (I took the end off the extension tube so it would fit, not a good idea for fry). Now the goldfish live in an aquarium. It was quite a pain to do water changes on, a python would be a good idea.

ive done this before. turned about 10 feeder guppies into abou 2000 then they died because i thought they would survive the winter outside. they are most likely non-toxic because it has to be safe for kids. you can build you own pond filter for about 20 bucks using a rubbermaid tub. and whatever you want to spend on a pump. i spent that much on materials and brought a pump and 2 gallons of bioballs from big als and put everything together in about 15 minutes. email me for directions on how i put it together. john
