Kh & Gh test kit question

I just ordered a test kit for hardness. I'm not sure but I think I'm missing part of the kit. It's an API kit, I've got the booklet, tubes and liquid but aren't you supposed to get 2 color cards with it?

I have the same Kh & Gh test kit. They do not come with "color" cards. They come with the instructions which tell you how to test the water. For Kh fill one tube to the line and add one drop at a time, (capping and turning to mix). After the first drop or 2 the water should turn blue. Keep adding 1 drop at a time, mixing after each until the water turns yellow. Make sure you have noted the number of drops added. Turn to the back page and look at the chart to see the ppm for the number of drops added. The instructions for Gh are the same only water will change from orange to blue. Example: my tank water takes 5 drops for Kh which = 89.5ppm, my Gh takes 9 drops which = 161.1ppm.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

All the gh and kh tests I've used (aside from strips) use the same principle. You just keep adding drops until the colour changes. No colour card needed. You count the drops, do the math, and get the gh and kh value...

I had the same issue myself, and followed the instructions above. However do you just add drops till the color swings to a noticeable color difference or add drops untill it has a vivid color difference? Thanks

I add one drop at a time until the water changes color. IME the color change intensifies if the tube sits for a few minutes. One note - don't use your finger to cap the tube as you mix each drop, any oils or dirt on your finger can skew the results. Take the time to use the cap after each drop.

I have found through weekly testing that I can generally start with a few drops based on past experience. If the water change is immediate, I start over with the testing procedure.

That's odd, cause I've seen the same test kit where I live and it did have the cards in it. Its the same test as the one I ordered, I just didn't feel like spending $20 on one kit.

You're supposed to add a single drop and then shake the tube and repeat until the colour changes. I just add drops until I notice a slight colour change.

I've had them with colour cards as well, but they just show the two colours. They are usually vastly different, like blue and yellow, so not really necessary. They colour also generally changes with the addition of one drop, two drops will finish the change if incomplete. I count to the first change I see.

Thats how I have ran the test so far... each test has taken exactly three drops for both KH and GH. I wish there was a more exact and accurate way to test but it will work for now. :)
