My wife's jeweled cichlid doesn't show much color. It's normally a silver color with a few blue spots. In the LFS, I've seen them as bright orange and red with blue spots. We've changed the substrate to black gravel. It did bring out the darkness in her convicts, but didn't affect the jewel very much.

Any idea what could be keeping her from reaching her full color potential?

Peak colors are usually attained only when spawning.

Make sure your water is good and makes sure she is eating. Look for anything that is not normal for her.

How long have you had it in the tank?

We've had it for well over 6 months. We used to have 2 of them, but the convicts starting spawning and we didn't know it, so they killed one of them. But neither of them at any point had any more color than silver w/ blue spots.

Well, there goes my guess. I was going to say it can take them a week or two to get their color back when they are moved or put in a new home and they get stressed. I know my JD did that when he was younger. He would be very dull for a few days after I cleaned the tank. Now he's not scared of me though.

We sell two diffrent types of jewel cichlids in my store,

a turquoise jewel cichlid and a super red jewel cichlid

the super red jewel sounds like the one that you want but the turquoise jewel sounds like what you got.

That makes more sense considering since we've removed another convict from the tank, she seems to turn more purple and blue now. Her aggression has picked up a little too.
