Originally posted by Lila Boffins My LFS showed me yesterday the parents with the fry. I couldn't believe it! I had read so many times that they were infertile! At least these babies won't be artificially colored.
I have heard other sources which claim jellybean males can be fertile. These antidotes are almost always in the form you describe, a lfs saying the fry in a tank come from a JBxJB. The question is were there male convicts in the tank at some point to fertilize JB eggs? If JB males are fertile it can only mean convicts are genetically much closer related to one of the blood parrot parent species than either of those species are to each other.
The only fish in there were jellybeans, and (now I remember), I think they had a couple BPs in there. That was all. The only two in the tank though, the ones gaurding the fry are both JBP.
JB X BP are definitely fertile...I'd never heard of JBC X JBC crosses, but BPs were supposed to be infertile for the longest time, and now people can breed them without either of the intermediate cichlid species!
JB's are fertile all right but then again they are so close to being convicts that you would expect it.JB x BP works too, heres a few pics of my resulting babies(I say babies but they are almost 6" now)
The biggest with his mother
This ones stripes are so faint and he is getting quite a lot of orange colouration.
