Is this a bubble nest?

ummm............
im going to say no,
becuase in the first pic the bubbles are just too numerous and thy don't look like they are attached to anything and not stacked deep enough.
i think it may just be protien build up, time for another water change.

Yes, it's a big, terrific beautiful bubblenest.

Some Anabantids do not use material in their bubblenests. For instance, you'll see male bettas kept in restricted, three inch diameter "fish bowls" who make nests similar (but not as nice looking) as yours. Others, like the honey, dwarf and Indian Banded Gourami will utilize dead plant pieces, floating plants etc.

My Paradise tends to use the floating leaves of my Aponogetan as the "foundation" of his nests.

Your betta is obviously pretty happy with the good food he's getting and the care. I find that my Paradise makes these elaborate nests during times of contentment and good feedings.

As for a protein build-up, I really doubt that's what you're seeing. It most certainly is a nest.

well i figured the bettas in a bowl dont reall have anything to work with and there's no current to blow the nest around, hence no need to reinforce.
but any way we'll see in a few weeks. are they mated or just a vacuum behavior?

There's not a female in sight. Just some male guppies and a male platy on the other side of a divided 10 gallon. He's either bored or an optimist.

I'm glad he's showing an interest in something though. He's been so mellow until today, just resting on top of plants and wandering around the tank. I was afraid he'd be boring and never show his colors.

I would say it's probably some of his firsts attempts at bubble-nesting, hence why it's kind of all over the place. Most bettas when you buy them are only 3-4 months old and so they've never really gotten into nesting until after you buy them. Most start by making bubbles experimentally, which means they end up all over the place as the instinct to nest kicks in. The older the betta grows, the better the nest. And of course, their overall health and happiness is reflected in how well they maintain this natural behavior. So yeah, he's just young and reckless... and very happy. :)

Nope, thats not a bubble nest. Betta's won't make his nest all over the tank, he usually keep in one place and the nest is very thick. For yours, you need to do some water change

Just did a 30% water change 2 days ago.

The bubbles are gone now though. When I came home today he had some how gotten around the divider into the side of the tank with the guppies. The bubbles dissapeared while I was getting everyone rearranged. Now my Betta is sulking on the bottom of the tank :( I think I hurt his feelings by killing his beautiful bubbles.
