Is it ok to turn off my air pump over night, since my 20 gallon tank is in my room?

I have my 20 gallon aquarium in mr oom, so would it be ok to turn off the air pump every night, for like 7 hours? I leave it on the reast of the time, which would then be 17 hours. Will my fish be ok if it gets turned off every night, or is there anyway I can make it more silent!?

They'll be totally fine if you have enough surface agitation from your filter. The air pump isn't even really necessary and many advanced aquarists don't find a need for them. If you have a HOB filter, just lower water level to increase surface agitation if you notice your fish in the morning gasping at the surface.

Mhmm ok, but...

Since I already bought it, I'm going to use it lol, and it gives it a nice look too :). So form your post, since it isn't even a necesity, I'm guessing that's ok. Also, my tank is like 8 feet from my bed, so the lower the water, the more noise it's going to make. I have the 20 gallon HOB power filter, I think it's like 125 gph. So you think and an air bubbler could filter my 20 with about 10 small fish in it andaerate it well?

I have the same problem, mine is so incredibly loud that some nights it makes me almost crazy. I think that as long as you have surface movement you don't necessarily NEED the airpump at all, but I'm not 100% sure of this. For the most part I've just learned to live with it, but I actually did put rubber bands (one or two wrapped) around mine which reduced the noise a little bit...I can still hear it outside the house (my tank is against an outside wall) so if anyone has some tips for keeping the darn things quieter I'd appreciate it as well.

The older they get, the noisier they get. It's just the nature of the beast. They wear out.

With modern filters, there is no reason to use one anyway.

Keep in mind - anything in the air that gets drawn into the air pump gets bubbled through your water where it could potentially dissolve into the water.

I do have an ANCIENT one for my betta tank that has been going strong for over 10 years that is still silent, but the one I'm using for my 20 is about 4 years old (maybe older, the time sure does fly) and from the sounds of it (the airpump that is) it may be on it's way out the door.

Mhmm.

Well, the actual air pump isn't my problem, it's the bubbles rippling on the surface that mainly annoys me. What can I do to quiet this down?
