I always thought it sank, but my goldfish has been leaving these long strands floating around the top of the tank. And since he's almost a foot long himself, they're rather large and unsightly. Is this supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong?

What do you feed the fish?
How often?
Temperature?
Water parameters?
Filtration?
Tank size?
Any other fish in it?

Try feeding the fish foods high in fiber rather than protein for the next few days but I suggest listing down the foods you give them anyway.

55 gallon tank, fed once or sometimes twice a day, temp is 69 F, don't know what water parameters means, under gravel filter rated for 60 gallons, no other fish, some live plants, I feed him Omega One Natural protein formula Medium-sized sinking goldfish pellets. I tried to feed bloodworms but he just ignores them so I stopped.

try feeding just the goldfish pellets for a while and let us know what that does to his poop.

and water parameters means ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph <-- the most common freshwater tank parameters.

do you have a test kit? i'd highly suggest picking up the API Freshwater Master kit if you don't.

I have a high-level ph kit and an ammonia/nitrate/nitrite kit. Just didn't know what parameters meant. I'll go test now and return with results.

Edit- he's been getting only pellets for 2 or 3 weeks now, I gave up on bloodworms.

oops, sorry. i mis-read your food list and thought the omega was a separate food from the pellets. note to self: drink more coffee and wake up better before coming on AC, lol.

i know that goldfish food is commonly lower in proteins and higher in carbs. sounds like the omega might have more protein in it than you want to be feeding? maybe a new food is in order?

Okay, ammonia/Nitrate/Nitrite is 0.
Tested with high-range ph and got between 7.4-7.8, so I tested with a regular ph kit because it's highest reading is 7.6, which is what it came up as, so ph is either 7.6 or 7.7.

What should I feed him then? He ignores any food that floats. I've heard you can feed plain cheerios and lettuce, would that work?
