this may seem like a stupid question...

but seeing as how water, live rock, and all kinds of extra equipment really add up to a huge weight amount to be putting on any random piece of furniture...what is the main difference between official "aquarium stands" and say, ikea tv stands that say they can carry 220 pounds?

i'm planning on starting my sw 55 gallon tank soon but i am worried where to put it without destroying my living room (hardwood floors) heh. thanks!

your tank alone would bust the ikea stand.a 55, substraight and water will be over 500lbs.and all that water will ruin the hardwood really quick.
the aquarium stands give more support where you need it.the tv ones aren't quite as strong.just try a dyi stand, there not that hard to make.

Yeah... that wouldn't be a good idea. **8 pounds per gallon of water** sand/rocks/blah blah blah.... the tank empty weighs around 80lbs.

My DIY stand is overkill, but to give you an idea, the stand itself weighs over 300 pounds. Hopefully that'll support my 55g for many years and I firmly believe it will.

where do i start?

so it sounds like i either buy a 300 buck stand or make one...but i haven't a clue where to start if i make a DIY stand. anybody have any pictures or layout plans for a DIY stand? thanks!!!

i got my stand at a scratch and dent part of the petstore, it looks brand new, the only thing that is wrong with it, is that where the tank sits on it and covers up, was missing a little paint, and one of the doors to the cabnit is bowed a little bit :) u cant even tell... but i paid 75 bucks for mine....so u can try to look around a bit...

also check your local pet stores for scratch and dent.

found a stand!

well, my boyfriend volunteered to built me a DIY stand...so i had settled on that...but i walked into petco to see if there was anything amazing...they were getting rid of a discontinued line and i bought a bare bones oak stand for 54 bucks!!

however, the stand rocks ever so slightly...the guy at petco said that once i fill my tank with everything, it will settle the stand. was he totally bull!@#$ing me?

lucky day if it works...now to match the oak finish with birch veneers in the same room. ick.

thanks for all who helped so far.

I'm not positive and i'm not a carpenter of any means but i wouldnt trust something that rocks for a heavy item. Perhaps try to make it more sturdy. :soda:

Some good deals on stands can be had on ebay,
