Here is my new pleco. Does he look like an L340 to you guys. I don't have a photo hosting account so the only pic is my avatar.

Your avatar looks like Hypancistrus L270 and if it grows over 3" it's definitely not L340.
L340 has orange stripes with a dark green body color and stays small. Here's a photo
of an L270 that I sold last week about 3.5" and a photo of L340 below.

Here's some additional information on L340.

L340????

None of the planetcatfish L340s show that pretty orange color like your pic, goldish maybe, interesting

Mine is yellow and black, no sign of orange and it is around 2 1/2 inches now. Looks exactly like the planet catfish L340 pic. I'm confused:confused:

Now that I look at L270, it looks like one of those pics. Definitely no orange anywhere. Still a striking fish . Boy are these plecos confusing.

I was refering to Jackster's pic (& google images too)... It would help to see the head of yours pealow & know how big it is. Many change as they grow to add to the confusion. What was it called when you bought it? I have a "scribble" I'm not sure of, he's changed in the last year.

He was bought as L340 but there seems to be a lot of L340's that really aren't what they're supposed to be.

L340 are extremely rare and typically very expensive. Just a note, photos of
plecos on many websites frequently show misidentified plecos. Also sellers
like to tell people what they want to hear as I have bought fish labelled as
one species which turned out to be something else. Some sellers do this on
purpose to get buyers who are unfamiliar with pleco identification to pay
outrageous prices for what are easy to find plecos, while sometimes it's just
an honest mistake with sellers simply not knowing what species they are
selling and calling the plecos the species they purchased them as off an
import list. As an example, I paid a huge price for what was supposed to be
Ancistrus hoplogenys L059 and they turned out to be L088 which are worth
about a quarter of what the L059 is worth. Sometimes you have to live
and learn.
