I would love to have Java Moss attached to my driftwood rather then floating around in a ball spinning in circles due to my sponge filter. How would I do this? Would regular string work or do I need special string?

Also, how do you attach Java Fern to Rock/Driftwood?

mesh might block out light... i've heard that cotton thread will disolve over time so you wont need to untie it...

I think that would work, although as mcox stated may block out light. I have used regular sewing string, but it can deteriorate over time before your java moss gets a good foothold on the driftwood. I think pple even use fishline.

I used a combo of fishing line and regular thread, i think it took about 1.5 months before the regular thread brokedown.

I use fish line and no it won't break down on its own. You just need to remove it when the plant is attached. This is more effective for me. I tried thread a couple of times and within a few weeks it broke down and the plant was still not attached.
