walmart sells small cuttle bones in the pet dept just drop that in your tank thats what i used when i had small grow out tanks with baby snails. i now buy 12 inch ones at the feed store for 2.00 and drop 1 in every sump on all my tanks.
Snail jello! Now that's a great way to start my morning. Everything I put in the tank for the snails my fish get to 1st. I've got these spirulina/veg/krill cubes I put in every once in a while. I'm pretty sure my animals are getting enough to eat. I'm just wondering how big a piece of bone I should put in my tank so my snails have big strong healthy shells.
I drop a half of a cuttle bone in my 10 and let it float around. There is almost always a snail, a shrimp, or a juvie BN on it. Sometimes 1 or more of all 3 species at once!
As far as it changing the water chemistry, that is the entire reason I add it. (I also keep a small piece of coral in there as well). By doing so, it has slowed the problem of dissolving shells on my snails. They are also provided with a calcium enriched food. I wish I could stop it altogether!
I have quite soft water (3-4 DGH & 1-3 DKH) & use crushed coral in some of my filters. I've tried cuttlebone but it floated unless stuck between filter media. A few TBsps of crushed coral seems to be enough for cherry shrimp & feeder pond snails in 10-40 gallon tanks so far & easier to use.
I have a lifetime supply of CC, I'm in MA too, PM me if you want to drive near Westborough, I can give you some.
I a new member here and i've read very good insights here on tank improvements. I have a tank with giant clams and canary wrasses and i wanted to rise up the calcium level...is it advisable to place cuttlebone in the filter to have a higher calcium?
