I am about to set my 75 back up with plant substrate today. I am thinking that it will be easier to place the plants while the tank is dry and then fill it. My take an hour or so. Can I do this without any negative effects on the plants?

Thats fine, you can keep a spray bottle of tank water nearby and just mist the plants every 15 minutes or sooner, basically to keep the plants moist.

When I rescape, which seems to be often, my plants are out of the tank for sometimes 2+ hours and I've never had a problem. I either mist them or place them in bowls of water, which while it is a pain seems to work well. Good luck!

I would not plant w/o water in the tank. Instead use the following method. Fill the tank about 1/3 and plant the foreground, raise the level to fill the tank 50-60% and do the midground and then raise the water to be 80% or so and plant the tall rear plants.

You will save yourself a lot of headaches :-)

Well, I started on it right after jpappy's post so I missed the others. I did it empty, but not dry. i wet the soil first. I only had a handful of plants anyway, so it didn't take that long. Tank is full now. seems to worked ok.
