How cold is too cold for goldfish? Fancy and single tailed. Winters here on average in the daytime is 40s-50s and at night on average is high 30s. Would that be too cold for certain fancies? Depth of pond- 2-3 ft.

Pond goldfish will survive a bit of ice on the top of the pond.

My old goldfish is still in my ex girlfriends pond, and it's survived overnight temps down to about 10F most winters. Some days the ice stayed for a couple of days. The fish dont eat or swim much when it's that cold, but they can handle those temps for several months and will become more active as the weather warms up again. If the pond is big and deep enough they can handle a good "ice skating" type freeze that might last for weeks.

What about fancies? I imagine more sensitive ones wouldn't do well below 50 or so? Would orandas and black moors do fine in these temps?

Ive had black moors in pond that has froze over before, and even though ive lost a few, some did survive. I stopped keeping black moors in ponds because they are so hard to see with the dark colored liner. Not sure about other fancys.

fancies are really warm water fish,.. but i wouldn't go below 55-60 at night
its just too cold for them, in winter outside,..

but commets i have had outside in pa winters in a container almost forzen solid and be fine,.. tank had ice foot and half thick all around and water in middle from over night and broke them out in morning and they were fine,.. just need air exchange at all times,..
that was a bad day and night then but most times it wasn't bad that time it was below 0

I've read a lot that 50 degrees is a minimum. I would take them in over the winter if I were you.
:iagree:

Fancy goldfish, because of their inbred external mutations/deformities, also have lots of internal mutations/deformities and are much less hardy compared to their long-bodied *normal* goldfish. For that reason, they do not do nearly as well as long-bodied goldfish when it comes to temperature extremes or anything else for that matter. Normal goldfish should live over 20 years with the documented world record for a pet goldfish being 43 years but unconfirmed reports of 60+ years exist, whereas *fancy* goldfish should live to 10 years but unfortunately most don't due to their many health issues.

Alight, if I do keep fancies outside I guess I'd need to bring them in around Nov. when it starts to get below 60.

Comets, Shubunkins, Sarrasa live in here.

Some double tails like Wakins and Watonias can survive really cold temps.

Fancies will do great in summer ponds and can be brought indoors once temps. drop.
