Simple question I just want to know if it's safe to put slate tile from Home Depot in an aquarium. I've read conflicting thoughts online I just want to hear what you guys have to say. Thanks

Is it actual slate shaped like tile or tile that's made to look like slate?

If they have it available online a link would be helpful.

It looks like many thin layers sandwiched together. They flaked when I made it into smaller pieces.

Pictures alone are not going to provide enough information. With a link, you could determine the manufacturer, contact them, ask what it contains or if they coat it with anything, research those materials and find out if they are inert (good), toxic (bad), and how they breakdown in water. It may vary quite a bit tile to tile. For example, some rocks contain naturally occurring asbestos, some are radioactive (barely, but interesting).

HD has 300+ search results for "slate tile" on their website. I'm surprised it's not on there. Best thing would be to go back to the store and find out what you have.

Or you could just have experience with slate roofs! It's a natural stone product, no coatings, check it with a geiger counter if it makes you feel safer using it. I use them all the time to mount pieces of driftwood that won't stand the way I want them to.

Make sure it is natural slate. There is man made "slate" for siding and roofing that is just asbestos and cement. Not used much anyone, but it is still out there.

And remember not all natural slate is the same. There are many different types and compositions. Some containing higher amounts of mica and iron than others.

Looks like slate to me. California Gold type to be exact. I use that with GBRs and shrimps and all are well. It was leftover flagstones pieces. Mines are flakey too.
