hith/salt

I think that most people around here advocate large, frequent waterchanges, vitamins and a wide variety of good foods to heal a fish with HITH. If I'm not mistaken, aquarium salt won't help. Some people claim that hole in the head is caused by hexamita but others say that it is caused by poor water conditions. What size tank do you have your oscar in and water is your waterchange routine?

Sorry, I just realized that you didn't say that you had an oscar, but regardless, my advice stays the same.

salt will do nothing in prevention
like the above poster water changes are the best prevention
try and keep nitrates down + a high quality food
i used salt back in the day when it was all hyped up, i found its pointless to use salt in a freshwater aquarium, its not proven to have any benefits at all.
if you need salt to try and fix something (disease, nitrates etc) then you better look into whats causing the problem and fix it with water changes.
unless you keep african cichlids (rift lake salts) theres no use of salt in a fresh water set up

as a dip to rid of parasites yes
but in a tank it cant cure parasites cuz its just not enough
its recomended for pretty much everything to be used as a tonic, i personally hate aquarium salt
ive used it on alot but the worst was using it for pond fish. it increased their slime coating so much that their slime would clog up the filters
im just anti salt
if your fish have ich the best treatment and safest i found was aquarisol, its copper salts

I disagree, salt is very effective for treating ich. Small inverts have a much lower tolerance for salt than fish, and the reccomended dosage of 1tbls per 5gal WILL kill ich when it reaches it's free swimming stage.

As for the other uses of salt (as a general tonic, flesh wounds.......) I agree, salt is not all that it's cracked up to be.

oh yes yes i agree salt can cure ich
i thought they meant like aquarium salt used as a tonic for treating ich
:o

i made a boo boo once, i had some left over frozen mysis shrimp that i was feeding to my marine fish. i mixed a little of their sw in a cup to defrost the mysis, well i had so much left over i figured why waste it, so i fed it to my fresh water community tank containing otto's...big mistake, it wiped out my otto family that i had for a few years :(
luckily no other fish suffered
but that was straight marine salt not aquarium tonic salt :)
