First off, I have a 55 gal w/3 angels, 1 black skirt tetra, 3 algae eaters & 5 cat fish.

Second, I have a 10 gal quarantine tank. In it I have 4 angels and 3 black skirt tetras.

They seem to be doing fine and last weekend I was going to transfer them to my 55. I had them all caught except for one tetra. It was then I noticed that he had a fat blackened mouth. So I decided that I better not transfer yet. I treated the water with pimafix & melafix and have done 50% water changes about every 2-3 days. His spots don't seem any worse but they also don't seem any better. Is this a disease or did he just damage himself?

10 G Tank parameters - ammonia .25, nitrite 0, nitrate 0.

Could it be caused by ammonia?

I would really like to transfer them but I don't want to take the chance of losing my big angels.

Need advice ASAP.

Thanks,

Connie

Can you get us a picture of it?

The ammonia could certainly cause illness...water change to reduce to zero, monitor carefully.

Pic would help - but get ammonia to 0 asap.

Not a very good picture. Won't hold still. But hopefully you can see what I am talking about.

I looks like a bruise to me but I would leave him in there until it gets better just to be sure it isn't something else.

Looks more like damage than anything else. But I guess it could be genetic unless you didn't notice it for sure before. I agree you to get that ammonia to zero.

A 10 gal QT seems a bit small for 4 angels and 3 Black Skirts. Also, IME, black skirts can be a bit nippy and aggressive at times, especially with long finned fish.

I know the tank is small, but it was only going to be for a short period of time. They would have been moved by now if he hadn't developed the black spots on his mouth. Since the general consesus seems to be damage, would it be all right to move the angels? That way the tank would be less crowded. None of the other fish seem to have any troubles.

If I don't move any, should I be treating the water with anything? Other than doing water changes to get the ammonia to 0.

I bought the tetras because I had a lone one in my 55 gal and wanted him to have tank mates. He does not bother the angels nor do the new ones bother the angels.

It doesnt look like a disease to me. Id say yes, its safe , I would, move the fish to the other tank, however..if the fish get sick..dont look at me...lol

Its not damage imo my black skirts have these same spots worse on some have searched everywhere for info and have found none.

While it has got worse on some of them it doesnt seem to bother them physically as it has been at least 6 months since I noticed the black spots.

Ive tried mela/pima to no avail, parasite clear Ive sort of just given up hasnt affected none of my other fish as of yet.
