I have a Fluval 304 on another tank and have never had a moments issue. I picked up this canister from another aquarist and he never said a word about it having issues. I have replaced the seal and was hoping that was the problem. It primes right up and starts pumping but the water pours out where the head meets the body. I have to have it in a bucket just to check it out.

I don't want to keep pouring good money after bad into it. Anyone else have this problem and was able to correct it?

Thanks in advance.

That is a quick fix you might want to spend a few bucks on. Amazon.com sells parts for the fluval, you just need the connection, and I know they have them on there, I was looking at a new sponge holder for my 404. You can also try taking it apart, and greasing up the seals and the connections with Vaseline. I know it sounds weird, but it keeps the gaskets moist so they don't dry and crack and helps for a tighter seal. Luck!!!

I had the same problem with the 405. After close inpection I found a crack near the handles. Hagen did replace unit under warranty. The new motor head they sent me also leaked and I have not started it up in months. But come Monday I am going to give it another try.

Not long ago I bought a Fluval 405. Well i was impressed with its price and its ability to filter nicely in my 55gal aquarium. On the original setup everything went without a hitch; no leaks. I cleaned the first time and had no leaks. However the second time i cleaned it it developed a leak. I opened it back up, carefully closed it and started back up and it seemed to be fine. Again sometime later it was time to clean the filter once more. this time I experienced what many have been withthis filter, time after time of trying different things, i could not stop the leaks. Finally i tried pipe thread sealing tape . I gave it three or four wraps around the main rubber seal after putting the seal in its groove. It is working like a charm so far. I noticed that before i put the tape on, the clamps were loose even in the "clamped down position". After i applied the tape and clamped it down, they are tighter now. Seems to be a defect of design here. the rubber seal needs to be a bit thicker and the clamps need to clamp a bit tighter. the tape gives it enough bulk to seal. I will probably not get another fluval if i ever get another canister. I will be monitoring this repair closely in the next few days. If I don't say otherwise on here later, assume it kept its seal. only thing is, i'm afraid i will have to re-tape everytime i open it for maintenance. Well, wish me success, and i hope this gives a little bit more help to those experiencing the same frustration.
