Hi everyone,

I have a situation where I bought at Euro-Reef RS250. I bought it brand new at ebay from a person that never used it...

I get it here finally... and IT DOESN"T FIT in my sump :(

Any ideas on plumbing it outside? I have a center style refugium sump. Built into a cabinet that it is "net fit"... but I have room on either side to house equipment...

Thanks,

Rich

I would say treat the skimmer as if the sump was the aquarium. Just hang it on the outside, and have the pump just sitting under the surface of the water.

There are some mods available to make a skimmer external/recirculating. That would be your only other option at this point. You always have to assure the dimensions of your sump and cabinet space before you invest in a protein skimmer. I've seen the same thing hundreds of times and it can be easily avoided with a bit of foresight.

Edit: An example of the recirculating mod: http://www.wamas.org/forums/topic/21452-my-euro-reef-rs-80-recirc-mod/

I made this mistake... I bought a nice cone skimmer, made sure it would fit the stand height and the footprint would fit inside the sump. I also checked the clearance for removing the lid and cup for maintenance. I did forget, however, to check the clearance for actually getting the skimmer into the sump. And, of course, it turns out that I can't physically get the skimmer into the sump because there's not enough space between the top of the sump and the top of the stand. I'm going to fix this either by building a custom sump or by getting a custom stand (and matching canopy). I'm leaning towards a custom stand, as I've grown to really dislike how low the manufactured stand is, despite my understanding for why they needed to build it the way they did.

Oops, I didn't mean for my response to come across harshly. That's not what I meant. I've done the same thing with a skimmer, in fact. It's a silly mistake that everyone makes eventually and it's one of the easiest to avoid.

I didn't think it was harsh at all... I was just confessing. :)

wow... okay after some major sump renovation, I got it to fit... it is awesome after a few hours of tweeking... however.... it is SO LOUD I HAVE TO TYPE LOUD FOR YOU TO HEAR ME! It's the gargling noise from the return line to the sump if you know the RS-250 Setup... should it have a cap at the top?

The pump is obnoxiously loud... any ideas what I should use to replace it... it's a GTX-6000 if that helps.

Thanks,

Rich

Neither of my Euro-Reef skimmers have a cap on the top of the output.

Is the pump loud because it's vibrating against the sump, or is it actual motor noise?
There's a number of things you can put under the pump if it's noise from the vibration. A silicone pot holder / cooking pad works well.
