Hope you can help as am completely baffled-have 96 litre tank that had 7 platy fish in (plus some babies), one bronze cory and 5 harlequin rasbora, ammonia and nitirite very low, nitrate slightly higher (20) but not dangerously so, do twice weekly 20% water changes. Bought 2 angel fish and 2 clown loach on sunday. Clown loach are beautiful, and very active, but last night couldn't see one of them at all. Checked at 4am could still see one, but at 7am this morning they have both gone!! Surely angel fish couldn't eat them??? They don't jump out of tanks do they? No sign of them on carpet, i have no other pets! Am completely baffled! They are biggest and quickest fish in tank, what's happened ot them??

They sometimes hide and don't come out for days, sometimes it can be due to stress. Btw did you know that clown loaches grow to over a foot in lenght , I was wondering did you have a bigger tank ready for him to go into?

thanks

yes i have bigger tank for in a few months!!

Thing is there are hiding places, but i would be able to see them, there are no areas that they couldn't be at least partially seen in, so cannot see anywhere they could have gone in the tank!!

Yeah i use to have 2 clownloaches, there active here and there but mostly laying backsleeping cause theres only 2 of them, untill i got 2 more they swim around alot mroe and play around. And clownloaches take time to get used to the tank unless theres arleady a few clownlaoches already in the tank.

LOL, im so sorry to laugh, but that is exactly the same title that i did several weeks ago in another forumn, 2 days after i brought home 2 clowns.

I have come to find out that they are notorious for hiding and also (you might as well find this out now before you get scared) they will lie on thier sides and on top of each other as if thier dead,

one of mine went missing for 2 days straight, id id everything i moved ornaments, uprooted plants, moved gravel looked on the floor all around everywhere. long story short i found him inside the intake tube of my filter

I have a zebra, not a clown - but I guess they all have these problems - some of them, if not all.
I hope your clowns have already showed up by now :)
Be assured of one thing - dead fish will come up sooner or later (unless it is completely devoured by someone bigger)

If they're not on the floor or inside the tank, check the inside the filter (unplug then remove filter floss)

My loaches would swim against the current at the outflow of the filter to get inside and hide there for days...

also, do a very good check around the tank again, and a few feet away, they can flop. And really any fish can jump out if they feel so inclined and have an opening to go through. Some fish are known for it, but all can do it. You might also want to up the water changes, amonia and nitrite should ideally be 0. If the tank is cycled, they should always be 0 unless there is something going on with the tank :)

My clowns would hide inside an artificial driftwood I had, and yes, sometimes it was a couple of days. Also had one hide under a piece of slate, he was tight in there, couldn't see him except for using a flashlight.
