Irving, TX.
I am new to this site, and trying to find my way around. I have got a around pretty well and like what I have found. I started my intrest last year with a 25 gallon. I now still have my 25, but also have a 10, and a 120 gallon. I just set up my 120 last week. Has anyone heard of a product called Bio Spira? This is the first time I have used it and wanted to know if any one has had any luck with it.

Oh yah....it's a fairly common topic round these here parts. ;) Do a forum search on biospira and see what pops up.

Yes, Biospira is rather popular. Works sometimes. Didnt work for me, but others swear by it. I will not be purchasing it again for one, but others swear it works wonders. /shrug I followed directions to the letter. Maybe has to do with your local water conditions, age of the product, handling during shipment, who knows?

Yup, I'm with Rob on the Bio-Spira. I love the idea behind it , and I'm sure it works very well sometimes, but you never know what kind of condition it is in when you buy it. I tried it in my tank but unfortunately it must have been dead. I ended up aquiring some used filter material from a established tank.
I had been fishy cyling for over a month with very little results. Within 5-6 days of adding the used filter material the Ammonia and Nitrite levels were down to zero , and Nitrate was being produced. I highly recommend this method since you can be fairly certain there is viable bacteria in the material. The only negative I could see would be the risk of transfering disease, so you would want to make sure it came from a trustworthy source. I will use this method for sure when I set up my next tank in the future.
Just my opinion, Fatcougar. :hi:

Hello and Welcome!

Bio-Spira is an excellent product, but as others have stated, it must be properly handled.

I have two LFS in opposite directions from my home. One, in an affluent area, has a lot of high-end products, and seems to specialize more in Saltwater than Fresh. They carry a staggering array of products including Bio-Spira.......which they stock in cardboard boxes inside a display case at the register.

On the other hand, the other LFS located in an older and somewhat depressed strip mall has been around for a couple hundred years. Much of their product stock is older and dusty, lots of parts for older filters, etc. However, they are very knowledgeable, and concentrate on customer service rather than aisles full of the latest wet/dry sumps. Their stock of Bio-Spira is kept refrigerated, and when purchased is packaged with an ice pack for the journey home.

I've had excellent results using Bio-Spira and even cycled a tank with sky high Ammonia and Nitrite readings overnight (well....actually about 20 hours). I highly recommend it, but make sure the retailer you purchase it from, knows how to handle it.

OH, I almost forgot to mention the Bio-Spira should be added to a new tank at the same time as fish. It can be added a little after the fish as well. If added before the fish, it will starve.

Biospira rocks! I've ordered it online from a retailer that guarantees the product, and have had great success. 180g cycles in 3 days. Would not start a tank without it. It is, however, a little pricey when you order online. Overnight shipping is a killer, but worth it.
