Heating an outdoor pond

be careful covering your pond gases that develop need a place to go, i have 2 500 watt pond heaters in mine our winters usually are not that cold however my pond water will still get down to 50 f. the heaters are only supposed to keep it from freezing in really cold weather. bring them inside....

Interesting question....I am feeling the itch to build a pond as well. Is this for all fish that you have in a pond (I.e. bringing them all in for the winter) or just certain species? If you have koi and comets just mention a few.

Can get a wee cold here in Va.

Goldfish and koi are fine in cold water during the winter. They just need a floating de-icer that will allow a portion of the surface to remain unfrozen, so gases can escape. And if you are in an area where it gets really, really, cold, the pond should be a depth of 3' deep. Where I live the surface ices over and gets to be several inches thick.

A lot of people keep their pond fish inside in a kiddie pool in the winter. I imagine that it would probably be pretty stressful, both for herself and the fish, to try to keep a pond that size heated all winter.

If the pond is deep rather than wide, she could build a greenhouse around it, but I don't know how warm that would keep it.
