Hello all!

Sad news, I woke up this morning to find one of my new zebra danios all mangled, his head gone!

Currently, I have a cycled 5-gallon tank with a topfin 10 filter, small heater (set to 76), and several plants & caves. I recently stocked with with 4 new zebra danios, 2 fancy guppies, and a female betta that I had to 'rescue' from my 20-gallon as the other female betta (bought at same time a week ago) was biting her.

Yes, this 5g is a tad overstocked, I know, but the danios & guppies are still little, and I am just getting a new 10-gallon tank cycled for the female betta & danios..

Things were fine for 3 days with the new fishies, but this morning, one of the danios was dead, the top half of his body missing.. What was left of him was normal coloured, and all the rest of the fishies are fine..

Any thoughts?

I'm sorry for your loss, it's never pleasant to lose a fish. My guess is that the Danio died on its own from something else and was then scavenged by its tankmates. With that sort of stocking, you may want to double-check your water parameters just to be safe (nitrates, nitrites, and Ammonia), you may be going through a bit of a spike since you just added a relatively high bioload to the tank. It's also possible that the Danio was weakened by something else prior to arrival and it just took a little while to succomb.

I say the female beta in the library with the candlestick

I would imagine the damage to the fish was post mortem

it probably died first and it was then scavenged by the others

Could be the female Betta. I have a female Betta in the family tank that we had to remove because she killed a Neon and almost killed a male Guppy.
